Madame Butterfly background

Madame Butterfly

In a poignant tale of fleeting passion, a free-spirited American officer hastily marries a talented geisha-in-training, only to abruptly depart, leaving the heartbroken woman to confront the transience of love and relationships.

In the film, Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton finds himself on shore-leave in Japan, where he meets a beautiful Japanese girl named Cho-Cho San. He becomes infatuated with her and, with the guidance of his friend Lieutenant Barton, decides to "marry" her, intending to enjoy himself with cultural approval and then return to America unencumbered. Three years pass, and Pinkerton's ship sets sail, leaving Cho-Cho behind. However, she remains hopeful that he will return to her. When Pinkerton finally arrives back in Japan, he brings his American bride with him, intending to end his affair with Cho-Cho and apologize for his past behavior.
