In 1845, a wagon team of three families hires mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains on the Oregon Trail. Meek claims to know a shortcut, but leads the group astray in the high desert, forcing them to face hunger, thirst, and their own doubts about each other's survival instincts.
