The movie takes place at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, where a dentist named Biff Grimes blames his troubles on his childhood friend Hugo Barnstead, who he feels has always gotten ahead. Biff's life is marked by a series of failed moves, an ex-con label, and a dwindling patient pool. He attributes his incarceration to Hugo and has never forgiven him. Biff was once in love with Virginia Brush, but she married Hugo instead. On the rebound, Biff married Amy Lind, Virginia's friend. When Hugo calls Biff for an emergency tooth extraction, it sparks a chain of events that forces Biff to reflect on his life and the choices he's made.
