Three brothers and their mother are torn apart after losing their family home in Algeria. They scatter across the globe, each pursuing their own path: one joins the French army in Indochina, another becomes a leader of the Algerian independence movement in France, and the third tries to make a fortune in Paris's seedy clubs and boxing halls.
