A press agent, Jimmy Gates, devises a plan to boost his singer client Judy Ames's career by pairing her with a returned war hero, Sergeant Buzz McAllister. Judy agrees to the scheme, despite her reservations, and the two meet at the Manhattan Canteen. As they spend more time together, Judy begins to develop real feelings for Buzz, and they decide to keep their engagement a secret after Buzz proposes to her. Meanwhile, Jimmy's plans for publicity and fame create a series of comedic misunderstandings.
