Diana Cadell, a former Los Angeles prosecutor, takes a break from her private practice and visits friends in Florida. She's asked to represent a young man on death row, Gilbert Rawlins, who's mentally challenged and doesn't understand his crime. Diana faces obstacles in her quest to halt his execution, including his ashamed mother and her own conflicted boyfriend, who's also the state attorney pushing for the execution.
