After the Civil War, conman Quince Drew and his friend Jason O'Rourke swindle people by selling Jason, who is a free man, as his slave. They repeatedly get away with the scam until the townsfolk catch on. Quince and Jason are arrested by Prudy Jenkins, the tomboyish and stubborn sheriff's daughter, on suspicion of robbing a stagecoach and killing passengers. Despite being innocent, they are re-arrested for disturbing the peace. They watch a fight between the real stagecoach robbers in their jail cell and make bets on the outcome. When the real robbers are taken to court, Quince and Jason are left in charge of the jail. A gang of outlaws breaks into the jail, thinking Quince and Jason are the robbers, and takes them away. Quince and Jason pretend to join the gang for a bank robbery, planning to capture them and collect the rewards. However, their plan is complicated when the gang's boss asks them to retrieve the sheriff's daughter as a hostage. Quince is smitten with Prudy, but if they don't play along, the gang will kill them, and if they do, the law will hang them.
