During World War II, a young music student and her mother in Belgium are left alone after the loss of their entire family to the war against Germany. Their château is partially occupied by the German Military Commandant, who develops a romantic connection with the girl, Nicole, after discovering their shared passion for music. However, their love is doomed as Nicole is forced to steal documents from the Commandant by the underground, making their relationship ultimately tragic.
