In 1980s Saigon, a traveling Cai-luong troupe's star, Linh Phung, is struggling to pay off debts to a ruthless loan shark, with enforcer Dung "thunderbolt" sent to collect. As they form an unlikely bond, Linh Phung discovers that living life is essential for creating authentic art, while Dung finds solace in art and a new sense of purpose.
