Clark Gable's character, Verne, is desperate to escape from a penal colony off the coast of South America. He fails to convince saloon girl Julie to join him, but she ultimately betrays him to the authorities. Undeterred, Verne tries again, this time joining six other convicts in their escape attempt. Along the way, they encounter a mysterious figure who seems to possess prophetic abilities, and the group must navigate the treacherous jungle and board a boat to reach the mainland.
