Buster Crabbe, a renowned American actor, coach, and athlete, had a storied career that spanned multiple decades. Born with a passion for sports, he excelled as an all-American center for Indiana University, graduating in 1921. Following his academic pursuits, Crabbe embarked on a coaching career in Arizona, where he honed his skills for two years before exploring his creative side through amateur acting.
The stage beckoned, and Crabbe answered, landing the lead role in the 1924 production of "Leatherstocking." His impressive performance led to a coaching stint at Glendale (California) High School, where he mentored a talented group of young athletes, including future Hollywood stars John Wayne, Robert Livingston, and Jack Randall, the latter being Livingston's brother and a cowboy star in his own right.
In 1924, Crabbe's life took an unexpected turn when he was approached by Edgar Rice Burroughs to play the iconic role of Tarzan. Although this opportunity came with a significant salary of $75 per week, it required Crabbe to decline an earlier offer to play an aviator in the film "Wings" (1927),which ultimately went to Gary Cooper. The Tarzan film, while well-received by audiences, received scathing reviews from critics.
Crabbe's partnership with his wife, Jane, led to a successful radio serial, "Tarzan," which aired for 364 15-minute episodes across the United States, South America, and Western Europe from 1932 to 1934. The couple's chemistry on air was undeniable, and their show became a staple of American entertainment.
After leaving the radio scene, Crabbe continued to work in film, appearing in "Flash Gordon" (1936) as King Thun the Lion Man and "Zorro's Fighting Legion" (1939) for Republic Pictures. During World War II, Crabbe played a crucial role in forming the National Airmen's Reserve, a precursor to the Air National Guard, demonstrating his dedication to his country and his versatility as a performer.
Crabbe's remarkable career serves as a testament to his talent, adaptability, and enduring appeal, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of entertainment.
