In 1932, Dr. Meg Laurel leaves her husband and Boston to visit her friend Effie at an orphanage, only to find it closed. Effie is dying in her hometown, Eagle's Nest, under the care of healer Granny Arrowroot. Despite her best efforts, Meg fails to save Effie, who asks her to stay and help the community with her medical knowledge. Meg faces resistance from the backward and tradition-bound people, who prefer ancient customs over modern medicine.
