A powerful illusionist's romantic emotions for his enchanting young protégée are reciprocated, but she misdirects her affections towards his own mentee, unaware that the latter harbors a dark secret as a manipulative person.

Magician Erik the Great has an obsessive love for his young assistant Julie, who is under his hypnotic control. He also keeps Buffo, another assistant, under his power. When Mark, a poor and hungry youth, is caught stealing in Erik's apartment, Julie takes him in and trains him to become Buffo's new assistant. Mark and Julie develop romantic feelings for each other, which Erik discovers and announces their engagement. However, Buffo is killed during the opening performance, and Mark is falsely accused of the crime.
