Captain Smith is spared execution after the arrival of Captain Newport's ship in 1607, establishing Jamestown, an English colony in Virginia. Initially, the native inhabitants are friendly, but violence erupts after a perceived theft is punished harshly. Smith is captured, but spared when Pocahontas, the chief's daughter, intervenes on his behalf. He falls in love with her and learns to appreciate their harmonious way of life.
