In 1884, Martha Evans, a widow, and her daughter Hilary arrive at the Stockmen's Exhibition in St. Louis to introduce Hereford cattle to the US market. They bring a herd from England, including a prized bull named Vindicator, which Hilary raised herself. The family's plans are complicated when Charles Ellsworth purchases Vindicator for his business partner, Alexander Bowen, a Texas rancher. Martha and Hilary decide to accompany the bull to Texas to ensure it's used for breeding, but they soon find themselves amidst a web of conflicting agendas.
