Under the authoritarian rule of charismatic ballet impresario Boris Lermontov, his protégés realize their full potential, but at a cost: complete devotion to their art and loyalty to Lermontov. Young ballerina Victoria Page is poised for stardom, but Lermontov's scorn follows when she falls in love with Julian Craster, the composer of "The Red Shoes."
