Lucius Marplay, a publisher, escapes from an insane asylum after 20 years and sets out to kill the four men who framed him. He writes their obituaries in advance, which come true for all but one, Mark Peters. His daughter Joan and a columnist Noel Stretton help him, along with a mysterious Scottish character, Alastair MacNab. The rival newspaper, The London Tribune, keeps getting the scoop on the murders within their own building.
