Twelve-year-old Gillie Evans, a tomboy with a penchant for lying, lives with her aunt in a run-down tenement. When a Polish woman is murdered by her former boyfriend, Gillie witnesses the crime and discovers a crucial piece of evidence - the victim's gun. To keep the gun, Gillie concocts a false story, which ultimately leads her to form a bond with the distraught killer and mislead the police in their investigation.
