Summer 1943, in the small seaside resort of Raccione, near Rimini, the war is spreading northwards, but the residents are still enjoying their carefree summer. Carlo, who avoided military service, spends his days plundering the black market, popping champagne corks, and splashing around in the Mediterranean with his friends. He meets Roberta, whose husband was killed in the war, and their summer night's dream of passion begins. Despite their unequal love and Roberta's mother's disapproval, they decide to flee together when Carlo is drafted.
