In 1890 Minnesota, Christine Powell, the cunning leader of the Powell dynasty, faces a crisis as the empire's mining deposits dwindle. Meanwhile, Kyle Ramlo, a young geological engineer, holds the rights to the lucrative Mesabi range, but needs financing to develop his innovative open-pit mining method. Powell offers to fund Ramlo's project, hiding her true intentions to sabotage him and seize control of the Masabi rights. As Ramlo becomes entangled in Powell's web, his loved one, Cathy Norlund, tries to awaken him to the danger and deceit surrounding them.
