War veteran Johnny Pope and his wife Celia, who is pregnant, struggle to make ends meet in a working-class New York City neighborhood. Johnny's younger brother Polo, who has a crush on Celia, works as a bouncer to support the family. However, Johnny is hiding a secret: he's a morphine addict, using it to cope with his PTSD. Polo knows about Johnny's addiction and has been helping him by paying for his fixes, but Johnny's debt to his supplier, "Mother," is growing.
