The Korean War begins in 1950, with US Marines landing on an enemy-controlled beach. Among them is Lieutenant Frank Davis, whose platoon is tasked with capturing a nearby village. After securing the village, Davis reminisces about his past and his first meeting with nurse Mary Ferguson in a Japanese hospital. However, their reunion is cut short by an enemy attack, and Davis learns Mary is engaged to a Navy commander. Determined to win her back, Davis vows to rescue her when he learns she was on a downed transport plane.
