In the small town of New Mexico, a dedicated marshal named Clay Morgan, known as "Black Patch" after losing an eye in the Civil War, is faced with a personal crisis when an old friend, Hank Danner, arrives with his wife Helen, who had previously been in love with Morgan. Danner is suspected of a bank robbery, and Morgan must arrest him, but things take a dark turn when De Vere, a corrupt saloon owner, helps Danner escape and gets him killed. Morgan is wrongly accused of the murder and the stolen bank money remains missing. A young man named Carl, who was helped by Danner when he was bullied, becomes obsessed with avenging his friend's death and begins practicing with Danner's gun, eventually becoming the fastest gun in town - except for one possible exception, Morgan, who he intends to kill.
