In 1860 Edinburgh, a sheep herder named Jock Gray rescues a lost Collie puppy, naming her Lassie. After Jock's death, Lassie becomes obsessed with his grave, sleeping in the churchyard to be close to him. Despite efforts to rehome her, Lassie consistently escapes and returns to Jock's grave, even when faced with obstacles. The situation comes to a head when a magistrate orders her destruction for not having a license, prompting Jock's friend John Traill to take the case to a higher court.
