A mother's 10-year struggle for survival after being kidnapped and held captive by Ariel Castro, alongside two other women, and the unexpected bonds she forms with her fellow prisoners.

In 2002, Michelle Knight, a single mother, is on her way to a custody hearing for her 5-year-old son Joey, when she accepts a ride from Ariel Castro, a acquaintance of her son's schoolmate. Castro lures her to his home with a puppy, but instead imprisons her in a dark room with chains.
