In 1970s school, Karl Foyle and Paul Prentice were inseparable friends. Years later, they reunite in London, but their lives have taken vastly different paths. Karl, now a transgender woman named Kim, is rebuilding her life, while Paul is stuck in a dead-end job and prone to trouble. Despite their differences, they develop feelings for each other. However, things take a turn for the worse when Paul's awkwardness during a romantic dinner leads to a public spectacle and a court appearance. Kim, feeling humiliated and angry, flees, leaving Paul to face the consequences.
