A young Brazilian woman, Elena, flees her childhood of hiding during a military dictatorship to pursue her dream of becoming a movie actress in New York, leaving behind her 7-year-old sister Petra. Two decades later, Petra, now an actress herself, travels to New York seeking Elena, armed with only a few clues, including home movies, newspaper clippings, a diary, and letters. As Petra searches for her sister, their features begin to blur, making it difficult to distinguish one from the other. Eventually, Petra finds Elena in an unexpected location, forcing her to confront the need to let her sister go.
