In the wealthy town of Orbiston Parva, the Church of England recommends Reverend John Smallwood to fill a vacant vicar position. However, a clerical error hires Reverend John Edward Smallwood, a naive and unconventional man who shakes up the town's upper crust sensibility. He hires a black dustman as warden and takes in a large family squatting on land slated for factory expansion, exposing the town's unchristian nature.
