In 1936, Julia Packett, a charming London chorus girl, receives an invitation to her daughter Susan's wedding in Paris, unaware that her husband William, with whom she had a daughter out of wedlock, has kept their relationship a secret from their social circle. Julia, who has been separated from William since their daughter was an infant, decides to attend the wedding, despite having no money or suitable attire. Her presence at the wedding sparks tension and romance, as she reconnects with William, meets her daughter for the first time, and falls for strongman Fred Ghenoccio. Julia hopes to influence her daughter's decision to marry the wrong man, upper-crust Roderick Pennystone, and instead pursue her true love, the Packetts' hired muralist Ritchie Lorgan.
