A young Khoi girl, Krotoa, is taken from her tribe at 11 to serve Jan van Riebeeck, a Dutch trading partner. She adapts to Dutch culture, becomes an influential interpreter, and rises to prominence, but ultimately faces rejection from her own people and destruction by the Dutch.
