Ivan Bibic returns to his Pittsburgh suburb after surviving a Japanese POW camp, haunted by nightmares. He rekindles his childhood love with Maria Bosic, a fellow ethnic Yugoslavian, but struggles with psychological trauma. Despite getting married, Ivan becomes impotent and feels unworthy of Maria.
