In 1904, a charismatic medicine show performer gives a ride to a young boy who has escaped from a troubled orphanage, where corruption is being exposed by a determined new investigator. As they travel together, the boy becomes attached to his new friend, who is smitten with the investigator, unaware that her fiancé is involved in the corruption.
