Milk background

Milk

Pioneering gay rights activist Harvey Milk made history by becoming California's first openly gay elected official, devoting his life to fighting for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

The film chronicles Harvey Milk's life from his 40th birthday until his death, using a recorded statement and archival footage to set the tone. Milk leaves his closeted life in New York and opens a camera shop in San Francisco, which becomes a hub for the city's growing LGBTQ+ community. He uses the collective purchasing power of the community to build political alliances and eventually runs for office with his partner Scott Smith. The film also explores Milk's relationship with conservative politician Dan White and the 1978 fight against a statewide initiative to ban LGBTQ+ individuals from working in public schools.
