In the 1950s mining town of Coalwood, a young boy named Homer Hickam is destined to follow in his father's footsteps and work in the local coal mine. However, everything changes when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, is launched into orbit in 1957. Inspired by this event, Homer becomes determined to learn how to build rockets.
