In 1938, Ailian, a 40-year-old wife, seeks to escape her husband's expectations by gifting him a young concubine, Chiuming. Meanwhile, American priest and doctor Father Andre begins teaching her 18-year-old son Fengmo and Ailian, as well as Chiuming. As tensions rise, forbidden loves develop between Ailian and Father Andre, and Fengmo and Chiuming, amidst the backdrop of China's invasion by Japan.
