The Marquis de Sade, a notorious writer, is imprisoned in Charenton Insane Asylum for his scandalous activities. He forms a connection with the asylum's director, Abbé de Coulmier, and a lovely laundress named Madeline. However, the Abbé's discovery of the Marquis' secretly published books sets off a chain of events that puts the asylum and the Marquis' life at risk. Napoleon considers sending Dr. Royer-Collard, a notorious figure known for his brutal punishments, to oversee the asylum, threatening its very existence.
