Alessa Woo, a private art gallery employee with a keen eye for art, is hiding her true identity as Ellen Woo, a working-class Scarborough native, in order to marry into wealth and escape financial struggles. She's being pursued by Nathan, but her standards are high and she's dreaming of marrying someone like Brad Unger, a successful businessman. Meanwhile, she forms a connection with Ben Crowchild, a First Nations artist who lives in the same rooming house, and they become close friends. However, Alessa sees Ben as not being financially suitable for marriage, and instead starts dating Patrick Aucoin, an art collector who outbid her for a piece at an auction. Ben knows more about Patrick than he lets on, and is hesitant to reveal the truth to Alessa, wanting her to love him for who he is, not for his potential wealth.
