In 1938 Rome, Marcello begins working for Mussollini and becomes increasingly conformist after falling for a beautiful young woman. On his Parisian honeymoon, he receives a job assignment to locate an old professor who fled Italy after the fascist takeover. At the Italian-French border, Marcello's bosses hand him a silenced gun. A flashback to 1917 reveals the connection between sex and violence in Marcello's mind.
