Larry Darrell, a war veteran, returns to America a changed man after his experiences in World War I. He initially plans to marry his fiancée Isabel, but his newfound disillusionment leads him to abandon their wedding plans. Instead, he travels to Paris, where he discovers a simpler way of life and develops a passion for reading. One book in particular inspires him to embark on a journey to India and Nepal, where he finds spiritual guidance from a lama. Upon his return to Paris, Larry is met with a changed world, including Isabel and his old friends, who have all moved on without him.
