Alvin Straight, a 73-year-old man living on social security, embarks on a solo journey to reconcile with his estranged brother Lyle, who has suffered a stroke. Despite his failing health, including poor eyesight, diabetes, and emphysema, Alvin travels 240 miles from Iowa to Wisconsin on his aged riding lawn mower, towing a trailer with his gear and sleeping quarters. Along the way, he meets various people who impact his life, as he struggles to complete his journey before his own mortality catches up with him.
