Heaven, a high-achieving high school student, lives with her family in the backwoods of West Virginia. She learns that her mother, Sarah, is not her biological mother and that her father, Luke, blames her for the death of his first wife, Leigh. Luke is often absent and spends most of his earnings on booze. Heaven finds solace in her siblings and a new classmate, Logan, who shows her kindness. However, tragedy strikes when Sarah leaves the family and Luke sells off his children, sending Heaven to live with her ex-wife Kitty and her husband Cal. As Heaven approaches womanhood, she discovers more secrets about her family and learns that she is more like her mother than she initially thought.
