Lucky Saunders, a State Ranger, is initially wary of newcomer Steve Kirby, who is running for sheriff, at a birthday party for Gayle Foster. Despite Lucky's reservations, Kirby gains the town's acceptance. Later, rustlers kidnap Doc 'Cannonball' Jones, forcing him to treat a wounded outlaw. Cannonball discovers an envelope addressed to Kirby and informs Lucky, leading them to follow the rustlers into a trap. Lucky loses his horse and is later accused of rustling cattle belonging to Dan Foster, resulting in his imprisonment.
