A young boy, Buddy, is sent to live with his older cousins in a small town after his parents' divorce, where he befriends a kind-hearted woman named Sook. Together, they embark on various adventures, including baking 31 fruitcakes as Christmas gifts, which they even send to notable figures like the President and Mrs. Roosevelt and Jean Harlowe. Just before Christmas, one of the cousins begins to question whether it's best for Buddy to continue living with them.
