Chris Christofferson, a coal barge skipper struggling with alcoholism, receives a letter from his estranged 20-year-old daughter Anna, who's leaving Minnesota to live with him. Chris abandoned Anna 15 years ago, leaving her to be raised by relatives in a farm in St. Paul. Anna, a wounded woman with a troubled past, joins her father on the barge, hiding her shameful experiences as a former prostitute. As she settles in, Chris rescues a sailor named Matt and his companions from the sea. Anna and Matt develop feelings for each other, and she experiences the best days of her life. However, when Matt proposes, Anna is hesitant, haunted by her dark past.
