Behind the Rising Sun background

Behind the Rising Sun

A fragile equilibrium is shattered in pre-war Japan, entangling international expatriates and their Japanese acquaintances in a tense game of mistrust and anxiety.

A Cornell-educated Japanese man, Taro Seki, returns home just as the country is drawn into war. He tries to find work with an American engineer, but is instead drafted into service in China. His experiences there lead to a profound change in him. Upon his return, his father, a cabinet minister, is filled with regret for the harm the war has caused to his son and country, but it's too late to save Taro's foreign friends.
