Nineteen-year-old Gwen Harold from Tennessee visits her aunt and beau in Washington DC, where they attend a Japanese Embassy reception and meet Under Secretary Hidenari Terasaki, who they fall in love with. Despite the racial divide and diplomatic challenges, they get married, but their happiness is short-lived as they face difficulties in Japanese society and the events of December 7, 1941, force Terry to return to Japan. Gwen must decide whether to follow him and their young daughter Mako, or stay in the US, while Terry must choose between his professional obligations and his love for Gwen.
