In colonial India, the British deceived Indians into migrating to Mauritius, where they were forced into slavery and labor. After India gained independence, some Indians remained in Mauritius and settled among other nationalities. The story follows the Sinha family, including Shekhar, his wife Sandhya, and their son Jai. Jai falls in love with Sophie, a Swedish woman, but their families disapprove of their relationship due to cultural and religious differences. Sophie's father, Norman, has a troubled past as a slave-master and doesn't approve of Jai, while Jai's mother, Sandhya, is opposed to Sophie being a Roman Catholic. The couple decides to run away together, but Jai fails to show up, and Sophie is left heartbroken. She agrees to marry Gordon, but eventually reunites with Jai, who is now engaged to a Hindu woman named Gayatri.
