In the movie, a mysterious illness strikes John Braun, who makes a new will excluding his daughter Barbara. His wife protests, and Inspector Queen is hired to find Barbara, who has gone missing after wanting to marry Dr. James Rogers. Ellery Queen, the inspector's son, takes on the case and mistakenly identifies Nikki Porter as Barbara. Nikki goes to the Braun home to protect Barbara and soon finds herself alone in a room outside Braun's bedroom, where she discovers his dead body with its throat cut. As Nikki is suspected of the crime, Ellery hides her in his apartment.
