Emile left his farm life in Saskatchewan to attend college in Britain, leaving his brothers, Carl and Freddy, to run the family farm. Despite Freddy's potential, Carl wouldn't let him leave due to his mechanical expertise. Emile promised to return but never did, affecting Freddy the most. Now in retirement, Emile attends an honorary degree ceremony in Victoria, Canada, and decides to stay with Nadia, Carl's daughter, and her 10-year-old daughter Maria. Despite never connecting with them before, Emile may reconnect with the family through Maria as they face their own issues, including Nadia's recent break-up and relocation from Vancouver.
