In early 20th-century Russia, the Jewish community of Anatevka lives amidst traditions of arranged marriages, where the matchmaker and father approve the matches. Reb Tevye, a poor milkman, has been married to Golde for 25 years and has five daughters. When the matchmaker arranges a match between his eldest daughter Tzeitel and the butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye agrees. However, Tzeitel is in love with the poor tailor Motel and the couple asks permission to marry, which Tevye grants to please his daughter.
